1879 when the foundation stone was laid by Sir Ashley Eden, the late Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal. It was formally opened by Sir Ashley in April last, and was called after his name, " The Eden Hospital." The estimated cost of the building is about four and a half lakhs of rupees or ?45,000, with an additional outlay of 30,000 rupees for the marble flooring. The former sum was sanctioned by the late Bengal Government for the erection of the building, while the latter has been raised by public subscriptions through the instrumentality of Dr. .Robert Harvey, the present incumbent of the Chair of Midwifery in the Medical College. Over and above these reckonings Sir Ashley Eden made a further grant of 12.000 rupees for the furniture, bedding, clothing and other necessaries of the hospital. It affords accommodation for one hundred beds with a larger cubic space for each patient than is to be found in most hospitals, and is intended for the treatment of labour cases and the special diseases of women and children.
